I am rather confused with all the foundations available and the extremely differing prices. Do you really get what you pay for? Does anyone have any ideas on what foundations are best for aging skin with enlarged pores and wrinkles?
Also are primers a must have?

I would go to a place like myers and get advice from the make up counter doesnt mean you have to buy there but they are trained .

Hi unibomba
I searched high and low for a decent foundation that didn't cost the earth. Im also not a young girl anymore at 40yrs. There are 2 foundations I like and both have good colour selection and the first is Designer Brand Mineral Foundation for $14.99 at most chemist. This is a powder foundation that brushes on and you can adjust coverage to how you want it. It makes pores look smaller and is very light feeling on the skin, doesn't give you that claggy skin feel. The second is Australis and you can buy it at Target for about $12.99. This is a liquid foundation and coverage is quite good although you will need loose powder to finish. If you lightly dust with loose powder after application it will stay put a lot longer. As for primers Ive tried a few and personally I prefer to use a moisturizer does the same thing. If you want brighter luminous skin try a luminator not primer. These are also available from Designer Brands at reasonable cost. There is absolutely no need to pay $30+ for a foundation you are paying for the brand not the product. Good luck with these personally I prefer the Mineral finish to liquid but we are all different :)

If I were you I would go with photo age it does wonders and it not only looks great but feels wonders. it can be worn on any ages. also make sure you have the concealer to go with it, they are both not that expensive but a price worth paying forr them both

I'm a beauty therapist and you can't go past a good mineral powder. Not the stuff you buy from chemists, good quality minerals with no talcum powder. You'll get superior coverage without sticking in the wrinkles. A primer is used to smooth out uneven skin and as a result the makeup lasts a little longer. Whether you use a primer or not really depends on the powder you use. I wouldn't bother using it witha liquid.
If you try a mineral make up and it's sitting in unwanted areas you know its not a good one. Generally the best minerals are sold via qualified therapists. Try Youngblood, I swear by it.

I have found for aged skin Clinique is best and I use the Clinique concealer as well for the dark skin under the eyes. The most important thing is to use a good cream to remove the makeup and to put a little cheap powder that is a darker colour than your foundation to dab on your cheeks and temples and nose you will find a little Clinique goes a long way if you use a sponge to apply it.

Thanks Kerri, I always thought of Clinique as a younger females makeup. No iea why. I think i might play around in Myer and test s few of the product. Trouble is i always seem to feel obligated to...

smiles no need to buy just tell them what your looking for and then say thankyou when you are finished I will think about it. Its best to try them just to see which one you like before you start spending money. I make my own face cream and always make sure I clean my face before bed and apply a moistureiser. Good luck

I have never tried a mineral powder as i have never felt confident in applying it. I think its time i gave that a try too. I am getting quite a little collection while i work out what brand suits best. I have never had the time nor money to purchase much previously, but at this stage in my life i am enjoying some me time.

Hi unibomba17 I dont usually wear makeup only for work or gong out at night I like Clinique at Myers you can have the girl behind the counter check your colour match and I usually use their concealer for the darkness under the eyes. I then use a little dab of powder over the cheekbones and at the temple and on the nose with a cheaper powder that is a darker colour no blush just gives you a natural look.

Foundations do differ in quality, price, coverage. And when it comes to foundations I believe (in most cases) you get what you pay for. I'm 41 with dry/mature skin and I've found Mirenesse Maxilift Foundation to be exceptional. (they are expensive but Mirenesse are always having sales and that's the time to grab it, so worth it). A cheaper option I'm using right now is the Maybelline Dream Smooth Mousse foundation, the only thing is that it isn't too good with the coverage.

Hiya,
Have you tried the new range of Garnia, they have all types for the black under your eyes, I found them the be really nice feeling on your skin, and light but still gives you a good cover and covers any blemishes also.

Price wise, pretty good for what's around these days.

Have a look at the range available now, as when you posted they were not around I dont think. See what you think, all the best

Cheers,
Lise :)

I am over sixty and am too, very confused about mature skin. I have always worn makeup, but was fortunate in earlier years to be able to wear anything.
I was recently lucky, through the inet, to trial a free pot of Garnier Ultra Lift (Day/Jour), and I loved it so much, I now use nothing else. This moisturiser just glides on and never leaves your skin greasy. I have had to purchase a replacement pot, probably around $20+, as I have decided I will not use anything else.

I also decided to try Nude by Nature, Mineral makeup. I suspect it can be a little drying (if you leave it on). But although a little messy to use, (it is loose powder), base, top coat and bronzer (if you choose), it does not drag or collect around wrinkles. It is not cheap, but I was lucky to have a Myer gift voucher which well covered it. Sometimes when I'm hurried, I throw on some other fluid foundation and just finish with the Minerals top coat. I think it works well also.

Every time I wear it, I swear there are people, (often much younger), who comment on how 'well' I look. I now say, it must be the 'mineral make-up'.

Not sure about enlarged pores,as my face is a combination of dry and oily. I think as someone else has mentioned, something with reflective (minerals) tends to give you a glow of health, but not oily. Hope this comment helps.

I worked for Revlon many years ago and the products are great and not too expensive. I would go to a department store that has a Revlon counter and speak to the consultant. Often they will put a small quantity in a pot for you to take home and try - this is great if you really are unsure on what will suit your skin. I think your biggest challenge will be that sometimes large pored skin doesnt always respond well to highly moisturising foundations. However, primer will definately help even out your skin tone and keep your foundation on. I have to be honest the YSL flash radiance is listed as a concealer but applied and acts as a primer and works miracles - but it isnt cheap instore(so go the internet if interested). Armani primers/foundations are the best on the market - but as they are expensive they are really hard to justify buying.

i have mature skin and i use a mineral powder which doesn't go into the wrinkles like foundation and it's gently applied with a brush. I use BYS MINERALS NATURALE foundation and for further information go to www.bys.com.au. I buy two at a time at a budget price. I use a good inexpensive moisturiser and let it sink in before applying the mineral powder. I am on a tight budget and find these products most beneficial to my skin. Hope this advice helps you.

I think that mineral foundations are the lighest and provide a great coverage. I use id bare minerals. It also has an SPF. It lasts a long time too. I have uneven skin tones and it makes my skin look smooth, clean and fresh

Value for money I have found Avon MagiX primer absolutely excellent for mature skin. It can be used over other moisturiser if required, and it reduces shine on forehead, nose and chin area for the whole day when used alone, or under your favourite foundation.

I am a mature woman with combination skin and I use a good moisturiser suitable for my skin type and mineral powder as it does not clog the skin like a foundation. I used a foundation when I was younger but now find a mineral powder best suits my aging skin.

I looked around and read ads in magazines and am now happy with the product.
Doesn't have to be expensive to look good.
Remember good cleanser and moisturisers.

I always just used cheap Covergirl foundation. But I started using primer, not fussed on what sort, and Estee Lauder's Double Wear Foundation. It doesn't come off easily (like some melt off or wear off) and covers beautifully. You can get it from strawberrynet.com for much cheaper than the shops for $43 and free shipping (usually $68ish from David Jones). You could go to David Jones or chemists and get colour matched and then order online from Strawberrynet.com

everyone likes different make-up and has found something to work for them. im a napoleon make-up artist and i know that using the primer works and makes ur make-up last and look great. it hydrates the skin and gives it a nice smooth pallete to work on. with the enlarged pored napoleon have a product called pore minimizer, its great!! its like a putty u put on around ur nose and pore areas and it just fills all the gaps and makes it so smooth and even. As for foundations napoleon have a great range for all different types of skin. for mature skin the best are minimal foundation ( a light coverage or you can build to a maximum coverage great for day & night) and light diffusing ( gives you a real light feeling for the face if your not into wearing alot of make-up)

Yes you really do get what you pay for and napoleon foundations last months! theres a difference in paying $20 for a foundation and $60. The way it looks, how long it lasts, how hydrating it is on your skin, wheather or not it clogs your pores. From experience with working with make-up napoleon is very popular and seems to work for everyone.

I like to use Revlon Foundation and I think that Olay range of moisturiser is great for the skin especially if you are in the sun a lot.

I agree that mature skin needs good coverage. But the most essential prep for the skin is at night, once cleansed use with a good moisturizer 2 drops of sesme seed oil and message your face which should only take you 2 to 3 minutes before going to sleep. This allows the blood to resurface and breath and heal through the night. Then during the day your skin naturally looks rejuvernated and a luminiscent or reflective foundation should be applied that is light in texture and rather looks natural. Don't paste it on though but apply naturally. Should give a brighter and lovely appearance to the skin.

Honestly, if you have mature skin, a good primer will make your skin smoother and more glowy. Loreal studio secrets has a brilliant primer, especially if you have pigmentation or large pores. Also, I find that Maybelline dream liquid mousse is really good for large pores. Otherwise, don't get cheapies, but I can tell you some really expensive brands are not worth it. And stay away from powders.

I sometimes use a Primer and for me I have used a few and I found the Australis Primer is just perfect and price is superb. Why pay out big dollars when the simpliest is all you need?
I have always used the different types of Revlon foundations until I tried the Maybelline Instant Age Rewind and I prefer it now for ageing skin. For some reason, it feels lighter and looks better.
You should go to Myers or David Jones Unibomba and get them to do testing of foundations for you.

As with any other form of makeup, you can generally find a great foundation in a cheaper price range. As a rule of thumb, mature skins benefit from a slightly more luminescent foundation which is also more hydrating. It's just more flattering than a harsh matte look, and besides that it looks more youthful. One of my all time favourite foundations is Revlon's Age Defying. When it's on sale you can get it for around $22AUD. And sales on Revlon foundations tend to come around pretty often, especially at the Chemist Warehouse, which is where I get mine from.

Primer is useful, but to be honest just wearing a good moisturiser and waiting a few minutes for it to sink in essentaily does the same thing. If you do decide to get one, the only primers of note I've ever found are quite pricy (and believe me I've tried a few). If you're willing to pay the money, Benefit's 'That Gal' primer is a great brightening one, and NARS' primer with SPF is amazing!

Hope this helped a little
