A simple question about Australia's ultimate comfort foods has sparked a passionate and delightfully earnest discussion among community members. The comments feel like flipping through a collective memory scrapbook – warm, indulgent, and unmistakably Aussie.
π₯§ Meat Pie: Aussie Heart in a Flaky Crust
The humble meat pie was the clear frontrunner. Flaky pastry, a beefy centre, and a splash of tomato sauce – nothing more, nothing less. It’s the food that’s there at the footy, the servo, or on the road, offering comfort in the most Australian way possible.
“Portable, hearty, and ideal at the footy or from a servo.”
Recent research by taste.com.au tallies with our community’s love of the meat pie. Earlier this year, the food publisher asked 2,350 Aussies what they consider to be Australia’s national dish, and the meaty favourite came out on top – particularly among Gen Z.

π Chicken Parmigiana and Chips: Pub Night in a Bite
Next up in the array of comfort food favourites was the chicken parmy, a pub classic that community members couldn’t get enough of. Crispy schnitzel, tomato sauce, and melted cheese with a side of hot chips – it’s indulgence and comfort rolled into one.
“Pub gold – especially on a cold winter night.”
π Vegemite on Toast (and Soldiers): Childhood in a Spread
Sometimes comfort is simple. Vegemite on toast, or soldiers dipped into a soft-boiled egg, took many people back to childhood mornings and lazy afternoons. It’s salty, nostalgic, and unfussy – the very definition of Aussie comfort.
“Vegemite toast is my cure-all – sick days, homesick days, all of it.”
π° Sweet Treats That Feel Like a Hug
Cakes, slices, and biscuits popped up again and again. Lamingtons, Tim Tams, fairy bread, vanilla slices – these are the sugary shortcuts to joy that make comfort taste like celebration!
“Biting into a lamington is basically the Aussie version of a warm blanket.”
Again, our community’s food proclivities reflect tendencies from across the nation. In 2022, sweet treats beat their savoury competitors as the nation’s preference when it comes to baked goods - 57% of those surveyed said they pick a sugar hit over a savoury snack.

π² Warm, Homemade Hearty Fare
Finally, plenty of readers reached for soups, casseroles, and lasagne. These are the meals that simmer slowly, fill the fridge with leftovers, and deliver warmth when you need it most.
“Pumpkin soup with crusty bread – nothing feels more like home.”
π What It All Adds Up To
From flaky pies to sugary slices, cheesy pub meals to toast with Vegemite, Aussie comfort food is about more than filling the belly. It’s about memory, warmth, and a sense of belonging. In the end, the thread showed us that comfort food isn’t just food – it’s a piece of who we are.

I dont feel it's right to make comfort foods things with a past of violence and misery, like that "meat pie". It's a mystery of exactly what those pies contain, but the meat packers would have put all sorts of grizzly bits of dead animals in those.
If you want real, wholesome comfort foods, consume no dead sentient beings. I like the pumpkin soup with crusty bread, and I myself have a toasted sandwich maker which I love to use. Being plant-based has never been easier and more delicious. Try leafy, zesty salads, vegan burgers, vegan tacos, and much else.

Aussies lean toward sweet treats over savoury, but true comfort comes from hearty homemade meals and nostalgic favourites that bring warmth and a sense of belonging.
